Thermite is a mixture that is made through a redox reaction with the help of rust and aluminum powder. This reaction is used to get molten iron which is used for industrial purposes.

Steps to make thermite at home
To begin, take 9 grams of powdered rust, 3 grams of aluminum powder, and a strip of magnesium for ignition. You can purchase all of the above materials either from a retail store or online.
Dry the rust on a Bunsen burner and heat it for an hour at medium temperature. After this, cool the rust before using it.
Now, mix the rust and aluminum. Make sure that it’s a 1:3 ratio. It is advisable to not exceed the limit unless you’re a professional.
Take out the mixture in a ceramic container to keep the heat of the thermite to a minimum. Now put the ceramic container into another container just in case the first container explodes due to the heat of the reaction. Make note of the fact that if you try to put the container on ice, it can lead to some severe aftermaths.
Now, light up the magnesium strip to use it and make sure that the strip is long enough for you to get out of harm’s way in time. You can also use potassium permanganate with some glycerin as an alternative, however, it is better to use the strip.
Make sure that you are at a suitable distance once you light up the strip and also don’t take your wielding mask off while you’re in the middle of this process.
Once you have started the reaction, you cannot reverse it. Also don’t use water to stop the fires, instead use dry sand to contain the fire.
You can use this thermite recipe to make one at home, but make sure to take all the necessary precautions at all times.
